Earth 2 has seen a bunch of additions to its cast over the past couple months. Who would you like to see get the the new Earth 2 treatment next? I have omitted any characters or legacies that have already appeared. An example would be, Green Lantern, has appeared so he, Jade and Obsidian are not on the list.

What JSA Member/Legacy would you like to get the Earth 2 treatment?

IGN spoke with Tom Taylor about Earth 2 Annual #2 and the what effects Miraclo will have on this new Batman.

IGN: With the use of the Miraclo, this makes Earth-2 Batman sort of the same as Hourman. Obviously a 65-year-old man would need enchantments to be Batman, so the Miraclo is needed. Do the comparisons to Hourman stop there?
Taylor: Yeah, absolutely. These abilities are only there for an hour. That’s how long it lasts, and that’s how long he can be Batman. There was no other way to do that. There was no other way for this 65-year-old guy to honor his son that he let down so much and take up the mantle of the Bat.

He then clarified who the name was in the scene above.

IGN: Going back to the Miraclo, you threw out a name in passing, Rex Mason, who is better known as Metamorpho the Element Man. That is curious because Rex Tyler is the civilian name of Hourman.
Taylor: No, that was most definitely — I can tell you more definitely than any other interviewer — that was definitely supposed to be Rex Tyler, otherwise known as Hourman.

This is interesting. This kind of follows the theme of addiction that comes with the Hourman character. I know in James Robinson touches on Hourman’s addiction to the adrenaline rush of being a superhero in Starman. If I am remembering correctly Hourman kept on superheroing much longer than his JSA team-mates. That’s a nice parallel with the new Batman.

Newsarama spoke with Tom Taylor about what is going on, on Earth 2. They touched on the Hourman and Metamorpho connection from Earth 2 #20.

Nrama: Metamorpho’s Civilian ID got name dropped, and of course Miraclo makes us think of the Tylers and Hourman – any plans for more roster expansion in the near future?
Taylor: It’s probably too early to comment on that. And the Rex Mason versus Rex Tyler conversation — we’re still getting clarification on it. So we’ll let you know when we know.
Nrama: I assume you got the idea for the Miraclo from Hourman, though…
Taylor: Oh, without a doubt. And that is how Batman’s powers are going to work. He’s a 65-year-old guy. He can’t be out literally soaring through the air and kicking parademons in the face. He needs this to be able to fight crime and to be able to fight a war.

Interesting. I wonder what needs to be clarified. Is there a bigger story brewing here?
UPDATE: Tom Taylor had an interview with CBR and explained further:

Now I have to ask, what really caught me by surprise — perhaps even more so than the reveal of Thomas Wayne is the Batman of Earth 2 — is that Rex Mason gave him the Miraclo. And not Rex Tyler. Rex Mason, traditionally, is Metamorpho’s alias and Rex Tyler is Hourman. Was that panel an error or is this revisionist theory at its best?
Honestly, I don’t know. [Laughs] I keep meaning to talk to my editor about it. I remember talking about it and it was Rex Tyler. And I’m sure that’s what it was when we sent it off. It was definitely Rex Tyler. I don’t know if a decision has been made to make that change and I don’t know why I am telling you this. [Laughs] I should really seek clarification. We’ll just have to see.

Interesting. So either it was a mistake or editorial has some plans.

Earth 2 Batman fights Falcone or Francavilla?

image

The preview of Earth 2 Annual #2 shows the first Earth 2 Batman investigating the Falcone family. I thought this was an interesting choice to add the mob family created in the 1980s to Golden Age inspired Earth 2. When I downloaded the book this morning from Comixology the family’s name was Francavilla.

Considering that part of the story takes place in the 1970s I figured Tom Taylor had to come up with another name crime name and gave a not to Francesco Francavilla’s awesome "Batman 1972" blog post.

I thought that was interesting enough to put up on New Earth 2 but when I went to take screenshot the name had been updated from Falcone back to Francavilla. I’m guessing it was Tom Taylor’s original idea to have the family name Francavilla and it was an editorial change. Interesting.

If anyone has a screenshot let me know!

UPDATE: Bleeding Cool has posted a picture.

I’ll say the book was a great read. I’m going to go into more thoughts after the jump but be forewarned there are New Earth 2 Batman SPOILERS!!!!!

If you have been watching Arrow this season you’ll know it’s chock full of DC goodness. There is a new Black Canary running around. There is a drug that sounds suspiciously like Miraclo. Cyrus Gold is part of Brother Blood’s cult and hopefully that will mean he will be transforming into Solomon Grundy.
I’ve been slowly recapping and reviewing Arrow over at Tuesday Night Movies. Go check it out.

CBR covered a panel spotlighting James Robinson at WonderCon. During the panel James discussed his plans for a Starman on Earth 2.

A great magician doesn’t repeat his tricks. When you do something because you think you should, but not because you want to, it doesn’t turn out well. There is a Starman on ‘Earth 2,’ though. The new Starman, the new Ted Knight will be an English astronomer with a large nose. But Jack Knight, I think I closed the door on him.

He then went to mention new characters we would see in Earth 2 including Red Arrow, Hourman, Wildcat, Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Doctor Bedlam, Kanto, Solitaire (The Gambler), Rhapsody (The Fiddler), and the Ultra-Humanite.

In case anyone was wondering, the All-Star Squadron (or at least a version of it) is canon in the DCAU.
